Kastella rises above Mikrolimano in a tangle of stairs, planted lanes and neoclassical houses. The reward is a wide view across Piraeus, the coast and, on clear days, much of Athens.
Why go
The neighbourhood shows a quieter architectural side of the city. It is best approached as a wander rather than a checklist, with Prophet Elias Hill and the area around Veakeio Theatre as useful orientation points.
Plan it from Dock38
Take a taxi to the upper streets if you want to save energy, then walk downhill towards Mikrolimano. Strong walkers can reach Kastella on foot from Dock38, but heat and stairs make the climb more demanding than the distance suggests.
Local note
Late afternoon is ideal. Wear secure shoes, carry water and avoid relying on a perfectly step-free route through the oldest lanes.
Pair it with
Descend to Mikrolimano for dinner or stop at Votsalakia Beach before returning to Dock38.
